Acclaimed printmaker Trevor Price continues to develop a recent body of work taken from nature. These prints explore the play of light in Cornish woodlands and the drama of the coast, intricately detailed in monochrome black and white. In addition, three new prints are drawn from Barbara Hepworth's garden in St Ives, as an homage to the great sculptor. Located only a minute's walk from his studio, Trevor has created prints inspired by the location before but the recent work is done on a much larger scale and in a different, almost photographic style. Trevor explains:

"The making of the printing plates feels very abstract as I am trusting on instinct as much as my eye, as it’s difficult to see what's going on. My hope is that these abstract qualities comes through in the final image when viewed close and for the viewer to get lost in the mark making. From a distance they feel far from abstract and become highly representational and almost photographic. However there is no photographic process involved in the making of the plates."

Trevor uses a polycarbonate sheet for his relief prints and slowly carves out the image using drypoint etching needles and a dremel drill, which is similar to a dentist's drill. Each plate takes many months to complete and it's always an exciting, but also anxious, moment when the first print is made to see if the meticulous work has been worthwhile!
