Caroline Saunders' abstracted wood carvings are tactile and primitive, encouraging us to stay in touch with the environment around us. Her playful forms begin as a story, thought-provoking and reflective.
Direct carving into the wood reveals surprises, resulting in tactile and playful pieces. The materials are often recycled and found, drawing from Caroline’s studio woodland surroundings, including the oak of a storm-felled tree discovered in a bog next to her workshop 10 years ago.
Caroline says, ‘The directness of carving infuses my sculptures with rawness and honesty, leaving scars of imperfection. Through this connection, I hope to encourage a deeper appreciation and awareness of our environment.’
Caroline studied a BA in Fine Art at University of Exeter, and then went on to do Sculpture at the Prague Art Academy. She has since exhibited internationally including public commissions in Norway, Finland, Germany and Shrewsbury.
